I'm not sure anyone is really ever going to know exactly when or where Reiki became. It was Dr. Mikao Usui though who founded Reiki as the Usui system of natural healing. This today is probably the most common form of Reiki practised in the western world. Reiki means ‘Universal Life Force’. It has become commonly recognised as the ability to help and heal others through the transfer or synchronisation of energy. Reiki is channeled through the natural healing abilities of any individual attuned to its power. Reiki itself is not something we should be afraid as it comes from a place of purity; the higher self. Most of us already use Reiki without even realising it. Reiki can be as simple as healing a child’s or a friend's sadness with a cuddle. We all have the power of Reiki. We are all capable of healing through touch. It is the passing on of life's positive energy. It can have little effect or enormous power. In essence, the healing possibilities of Reiki can be endless. To use Reiki means to be channeling the ‘light’ or positive energy through our bodies and into others. When you cuddle a sad child, what you are actually doing is sharing love and therefore positive energy. This is quite simply why a cuddle generally feels good for most. On a higher level, Reiki gives us the ability to synchronise the body's chakras or energy points. Consider it to be like the fine tuning of a piano. By focusing positive energy on specific energy points (keys), we are clearing blockages and cleansing pathways to allow the energy (music) to flow more freely and smoothly throughout the body (audience).
Learning Reiki As mentioned earlier, each of us already holds the power of Reiki and most of us would have already used it at some point in our lives. What most good courses are designed to do is explain it's power and tune us into it. There are many weekend or day courses nowadays being offered and it is up to each individual to find the right course or teacher they can learn from. Remember though, that many courses can claim to make us ‘Masters of Reiki’ within a matter of days. But in truth, it can take years or even decades to truly adapt to it, understand it and apply its strength and power. My personal teacher taught me a very important lesson about Reiki. That is, that we are never truly masters of Reiki until we have learnt everything about it and mastered all its power. And that in truth, only really happens to a fortunate few. Until then, we are all simply students and teachers.
The Power of Light Here is an analogy to help you understand more about the power of Reiki. Imagine a room with no lights or windows. Imagine the total darkness. In that darkness light one little match and see what happens? You are no longer in darkness now are you? This is the power of Reiki. This power was most likely used by many in the past. Even Jesus Christ would have used Reiki to heal the blind and the sick. Through Reiki we likely have the power to do many amazing things. I always say Reiki is only as strong as your faith. Reiki uses the power of light and energy to heal. However, as we must be careful in handling matches, we must be careful in handling Reiki. Reiki itself can do you no harm. However, by opening up a channel, we can also open up an opportunity for other energies to also make their way through. The higher the level of Reiki we seek, the larger the channel we open. The power of light is usually enough to negate any negative forces but still it is important we rely on someone we trust when we are seeking or learning Reiki. We must be confident within ourselves that the individual performing or teaching Reiki is coming from a place of purity. If ever unsure, remember the symbol of the cross. This has been used by man as a symbol of protection for many years before Christ. It will serve you well.
